The Massachusetts island of Martha’s Vineyard, the exclusive playground for presidents and their families, is about to get its annual summer infusion of cash and attention as President Obama and his family prepare to arrive August 10 for an eight-day vacation.

Local reports indicate that the first family will likely be staying at a $7.6 million resort home on southern edge of the island in the town of Chilmark where homes feature water access to Chilmark Pond, tennis courts and swimming pools.

Staying at the home of Chicago corporate finance manager David Schulte is a break from past Obama vacations because the $21 million home they’ve rented, Blue Heron Farm, isn’t available. Schulte’s summer home sits on nine and a half acres, has ocean views and a basketball court. […]

While the president typically keeps to himself and carries with him only a handful of staffers to Martha’s Vineyard, security will be tight. As in the past, the Wesley Hotel in Oak Bluffs will house security and communications officials. The owner told the Vineyard Gazette that the Secret Service has booked 70 rooms and another five have been reserved for the Transportation Security Agency. Rates at the hotel run from $225-$345.

Michelle Obama Takes Secret Vacation to Oregon

First Lady Michelle Obama Slipped out of Washington unnoticed Monday for a secret trip to visit her brother, Oregon State University men’s basketball coach Craig Robinson, at his home on Corvallis, Ore.

Mrs. Obama reportedly jetted into the Eugene Airport, landing at about 11 am PDT. She and family members then headed out in a 11 vehicle motorcade for the ride to Corvallis.

The White House has so far said little about the trip, which was unannounced. It’s unclear how long the vacation will last.

The White House today confirmed what many islanders have been anticipating for weeks: The first family will return to Martha’s Vineyard for vacation next month.

President Obama and his family are scheduled to vacation on the island from Aug. 19 to Aug. 29.

Obama to holiday in southern Spain

US President Barack Obama and his family are to take a holiday early August in the posh southern Spanish resort city of Marbella, Spanish newspaper El Pais and El Mundo reported Sunday on their websites.

Obama, who would be on his first holiday in Spain since becoming president, was to use the occasion to visit Spanish King Juan Carlos on the Balearic island of Mallorca, the two dailies reported, citing diplomats.

The president would stay at Marbella, a prime holiday destination favoured by the rich and famous, from August 4 to 8, according to El Mundo.

The newspaper said that originally only his wife and daughters were supposed to come.

The Spanish government could not confirm on Sunday that Obama and his family were coming.

Obamas will vacation on Gulf Coast

People are out of work, trying to make ends meet, the economy is in the tank, and all we hear is how we need to tighten our belts. So this is Obama’s plan, take another vacation. This will make number 8 in a year and a half. Can anyone tell me when he works?

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is taking his own advice and taking his family to the Gulf Coast on vacation next month, something he and first lady Michelle Obama have been urging others to do to help the area’s suffering economy.

The White House said the Obamas will visit an undisclosed section of Florida’s coast the weekend of Aug. 14.

Obama has made four trips to the Gulf region, including an overnight stay, since an underwater well failed in April and began spewing oil into the Gulf of Mexico. First lady Michelle Obama was scheduled to make her second visit the area on Friday.

On their trips to the region, both the president and Mrs. Obama have made a point of encouraging people to visit Gulf Coast beaches that are open and oil-free to help boost an area economy battered by the sharp decline in tourism that followed the spill.

“One of the best ways that fellow Americans can help is to come on down here and spend some money,” Mrs. Obama said this month in Panama City Beach, Fla., where she strolled barefoot in the sand and bought a cup of chocolate ice cream.

Since the deadly well explosion, the Obamas — sometimes without daughters Malia and Sasha — have escaped Washington for brief vacations in Asheville, N.C., their home in Chicago, and Bar Harbor, Maine, last weekend.

The White House did not say where in Florida the Obamas would be spending their time.

But wherever the family ends up, it will just be three Obamas — the president, the first lady and 9-year-old Sasha — instead of the usual foursome. Sister Malia, 12, will be away at camp for the first time — also at a location not disclosed.

Barack Obama’s seventh vacation since seizing office has raised the ire of some Republicans who should know better.

As reported at CNN.com, in part:

“The Republican National Committee launched a website blasting what it considers Obama’s “leisure activities or missteps” during the oil disaster, like playing golf, attending concerts and vacationing in Asheville, North Carolina; Chicago, Illinois; and now Maine.”

“Presidents are certainly entitled to vacation, just like everybody else, but there is a fine line as to when presidents should do it, what they should and where they should do it,” said Brad Blakeman, a former member of President George W. Bush’s senior staff and the deputy assistant for appointments and scheduling.”

Obama’s Dog Gets Own Plane on Vacation Trip

The Morning Sentinel, a small paper from the state of Maine, has a travelogue story of the Obama’s vacation in and about Maine today.
