Staring down the prospect of a public relations crisis — boycott threats and “die-in” protests included — over its donations to Republican gubernatorial hopeful Adam Putnam, Publix said Friday it has halted all corporate political contributions.
The supermarket giant made the announcement moments before a “die-in” protest planned by David Hogg, a vocal Parkland school shooting survivor and gun control activist. Despite the news, Hogg and dozens of protestors sprawled on the floor of a Coral Springs Publix for 12 minutes clutching sunflowers and signs that read “No NRA Money.”
Hogg and other students began their influential movement for gun control in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting that left 17 dead and 17 wounded. They’ve taken aim particularly at the National Rifle Association, and were angered at the news of the grocer’s unprecedented support for Putnam, who once boasted he was a “proud NRA sellout.”
At $670,000 over the last three years, it’s the largest contribution the company has made in more than two decades and possibly the biggest in company history.

What do they think they’re hiding by doing this? He will be President in 21 days, get used to it.
LEE COUNTY, Fla. – A Publix shopper turned to Four in Your Corner after seeing magazines with President-elect Donald Trump’s picture being covered at the grocery store.
He was shopping at the Publix on Del Prado Boulevard and Kismet Parkway in Cape Coral. “I lift it up and there was a picture of Donald Trump, the President-elect. I was like ‘Wow, really? I mean, what’s next?’” Walter Indyk said.
The white screen covers are usually for magazines with inappropriate language or pictures.
“I was flabbergasted. I was amazed. I couldn’t believe it,” Indyk said. “I was like ‘This guy’s going to be the President. They have the nerve to cover his picture up at the check out aisle?’”

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Explosive outrage is being unleashed on a popular supermarket chain after it published a 2010 calendar marking the date of Dec. 7 with the Islamic New Year, while eliminating any mention of Pearl Harbor Day, commemorating the 1941 attack on the U.S. by Japan.
The forward magazine of USS Shaw explodes during the 2nd Japanese attack wave on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Dec. 7, 1941. To the left of the explosion, Shaw’s stern is visible, at the end of floating drydock. At right is the bow of USS Nevada, with a tug alongside fighting fires.
Joyce Kaufman, a talk-show host on WFTL Radio in South Florida, made the “date which will live in infamy” the centerpiece of her broadcast today, expressing outrage at Publix Supermarkets for its calendar omission.

“We have guys that are fighting Islamic fundamentalists right now in Afghanistan and guarding them from ruining what little freedom they have achieved in Iraq,” said Kaufman. “And now I gotta celebrate their new year over here in my country when they’re getting on airplanes and trying to blow up planes out of the sky in Detroit? I gotta have their New Year’s Day on my calendar and not Pearl Harbor Day? We’ve lost our minds!”
Kaufman and many callers to her station called it a “slap in the face” to all those who fought for America’s freedoms over the years.
“I’m done,” she said. “I’m not walking into a Publix until there’s a formal apology. I’m not walking into a Publix until the calendars have all been pulled. I’m not walking into a Publix until they reissue a calendar and re-evaluate what they put on their calendars. It’s a free country, but I don’t have to shop there.”
