The Federalist

By

In a recent item for The Federalist, David Harsanyi considered the M16 rifle one of the five most innovative firearms in American firearm development history. Yet something equally significant can be said about the semi-automatic AR-15 derived from the M16. Second to the muskets used in our revolutionary and civil wars, the AR-15 may be the most important firearm in American political history.

All told, more Americans have fired more rounds from more AR-15s for personal defense, defensive firearm training, marksmanship competitions, individual practice, and hunting than from any other rifle. For that reason, the AR-15 is the primary firearm upon which Americans would rely if they had to fight for freedom today.

Here are 10 reasons to own at least one AR-15 and to become skilled in its use.

The AR-15: Americans’ Best Defense Against Terror and Crime

After the attack at Pulse night club in Orlando, Hillary Clinton looked past the obvious enemy – radical Islamic terror – and instead said “weapons of war have no place on our streets” and that we need to ban AR-15s immediately. AR-15s are fine for Hillary and her family. They’ve been protected by armed guards who use them for three decades. But average Americans who watch the news and feel genuine fear for their safety, and their families’ safety—Hillary wants to deny them the level of protection she insists upon herself.

Cries to ‘Ban the AR-15’ Based on Ignorance and Hysteria

American Thinker

By Michael Filozof

Yet another mass shooting has taken place in America – followed by all too predictable cries to ban the AR-15 rifle.

The pure ignorance of the people bleating for a ban on America’s most popular rifle is appalling. With few exceptions, most of the calls to ban the AR-15 come from liberal, urban women and metrosexual men whose knowledge of firearms comes entirely from watching Rambo movies or playing “Call of Duty.”

Even some in professional law enforcement know not of what they speak.  A local radio station interviewed a retired FBI agent who stated that he “could not understand” why people would want such a rifle.

I’ve shot service rifle competitions for nearly 20 years and held the classification of “Master” for nearly eleven.  I’ve probably put 20,000 rounds through AR-15 rifles.  Though I’ve never been in the military, I have more familiarity and proficiency with the weapon than most active-duty soldiers.  So I think I am as qualified as anybody to dispel the common myths about the AR-15.

First, the AR-15 is not a machine-gun or an “assault weapon.”  The AR-15 is a semi-automatic version of the M-16, which is a machine gun.  However, in Vietnam, the military found that troops with early versions of the M-16 were using fully-automatic “spray and pray” fire – and often failing to hit the enemy.  So when the M-16 was redesigned in the early 1980s, its fully automatic rate of fire was reduced to three-shot bursts, forcing troops to actually aim rather than hip-fire.  But any fully-automatic fire is simply not an option for the civilian AR-15.

Obama to Ban AR-15 Bullets By Executive Action – Attempts a Back-Door Gun Ban

Gateway Pundit

Barack Obama is going to ban on 5.56 mm ammo.
The ammo is the most-used AR bullets in America.

Many call this Obama’s back-door gun ban.

The Washington Examiner reported:

As promised, President Obama is using executive actions to impose gun control on the nation, targeting the top-selling rifle in the country, the AR-15 style semi-automatic, with a ban on one of the most-used AR bullets by sportsmen and target shooters.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives this month revealed that it is proposing to put the ban on 5.56 mm ammo on a fast track, immediately driving up the price of the bullets and prompting retailers, including the huge outdoors company Cabela’s, to urge sportsmen to urge Congress to stop the president.

Wednesday night, Rep. Bob Goodlatte, the Republican chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, stepped in with a critical letter to the bureau demanding it explain the surprise and abrupt bullet ban. The letter is shown below.

The National Rifle Association, which is working with Goodlatte to gather co-signers, told Secrets that 30 House members have already co-signed the letter and Goodlatte and the NRA are hoping to get a total of 100 fast.

“The Obama administration was unable to ban America’s most popular sporting rifle through the legislative process, so now it’s trying to ban commonly owned and used ammunition through regulation,” said Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA-ILA, the group’s policy and lobby shop. “The NRA and our tens of millions of supporters across the country will fight to stop President Obama’s latest attack on our Second Amendment freedoms.”
