$7-a-gallon gas?

New York Post

President Obama has a solution to the Gulf oil spill: $7-a-gallon gas.

That’s a Harvard University study’s estimate of the per-gallon price of the president’s global-warming agenda. And Obama made clear this week that this agenda is a part of his plan for addressing the Gulf mess.

So what does global-warming legislation have to do with the oil spill?

Good question, because such measures wouldn’t do a thing to clean up the oil or fix the problems that led to the leak.

The answer can be found in Obama Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s now-famous words, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste — and what I mean by that is it’s an opportunity to do things that you think you could not do before.”

Obama: Using Gulf crisis to push unpopular cap-and-trade bill.

That sure was true of global-warming policy, and especially the cap-and-trade bill. Many observers thought the measure, introduced last year in the House by Reps. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.) and Edward Markey (D-Mass.), was dead: The American people didn’t seem to think that the so-called global-warming crisis justified a price-hiking, job-killing, economy-crushing redesign of our energy supply amid a fragile recovery. Passing another major piece of legislation, one every bit as unpopular as ObamaCare, appeared unlikely in an election year.

So Obama and congressional proponents of cap-and-trade spent several months rebranding it — downplaying the global-warming rationale and claiming that it was really a jobs bill (the so-called green jobs were supposed to spring from the new clean-energy economy) and an energy-independence bill (that will somehow stick it to OPEC).

Sens. John Kerry (D-Mass.) and Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.) even reportedly declined to introduce their new cap-and-trade proposal in the Senate on Earth Day, because they wanted to de-emphasize the global-warming message. Instead, Kerry called the American Power Act “a plan that creates jobs and sets us on a course toward energy independence and economic resurgence.”

But the new marketing strategy wasn’t working. Few believe the green-jobs hype — with good reason. In Spain, for example, green jobs have been an expensive bust, with each position created requiring, on average, $774,000 in government subsidies. And the logic of getting us off oil imports via a unilateral measure that punishes American coal, oil and natural gas never made any sense at all.

Now the president is repackaging cap-and-trade — again — as a long-term solution to the oil spill. But it’s the same old agenda, a huge energy tax that will raise the cost of gasoline and electricity high enough so that we’re forced to use less.

The logic linking cap-and-trade to the spill in the Gulf should frighten anyone who owns a car or truck. Such measures force up the price at the pump — Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs thinks it “may require gas prices greater than $7 a gallon by 2020” to meet Obama’s stated goal of reducing emissions 14 percent from the transportation sector.

Of course, doing so would reduce gasoline use and also raise market share for hugely expensive alternative fuels and vehicles that could never compete otherwise. Less gasoline demand means less need for drilling and thus a slightly reduced chance of a repeat of the Deepwater Horizon spill — but only slightly. Oil will still be a vital part of America’s energy mix.

Oil-spill risks should be addressed directly — such as finding out why the leak occurred and requiring new preventive measures or preparing an improved cleanup plan for the next incident. Cap-and-trade is no fix and would cause trillions of dollars in collateral economic damage along the way.

Emanuel was wrong. The administration shouldn’t view each crisis — including the oil spill — as an opportunity to be exploited, but as a problem to be addressed. And America can’t afford $7-a-gallon gas.

  1. Indeed, Socialism is not the answer. Since neither the Obama administration nor Democrats in general are socialists, we can move past that issue.

So – let me be sure I get you right – are you saying that we should not be looking to develop alternative energy sources? Do you think that our reliance on oil is sustainable in the long term? Do you actually like being held hostage by the middle east?

Developing alternative energy will indeed have a cost. But, our current situation is unsustainable. The longer we wait to do something, the more it will cost in the end.

    • President Jimmy Carter created the Sec of Energy back in the 70’s after the gas shortage. The Dept of Energy job was to make sure we were never dependent on foreign oil ever again. It didn’t work, and the department is still around. The US has enough oil to supply this country for well over a hundred years or more. I don’t agree with kissing up to the Saudis for their oil or any other country in the Middle east. Since the 70’s we have heard how we need cars that get better gas mileage and that has happened, but the price at the pump keeps going up. The all mighty dollar $$$ is hard at work paying off all the corrupt politicians on both sides.

    • Obama isn’t a socialist BS, read on hippieprof and lay down that kool-aid your drinking.

      Frank Marshall Davis — Communist
Obama had an admitted relationship with someone who was publicly identified as a member of the Communist Party USA (CPUSA). The record shows that Obama was in Hawaii from 1971-1979, where he developed a close relationship, almost like a son, with Davis, listening to his “poetry” and getting advice on his career path. But Obama, in his book, “Dreams From My Father,” refers to him repeatedly as just “Frank.”Also called him his mentor.

“Ecoscience: Population, Resources, Environment,” published in 1977 and co-authored by Holdren with Malthusian population alarmist Paul R. Ehrlich and Ehrlich’s wife, Anne. , the authors argued involuntary birth-control measures, including forced sterilization, may be necessary and morally acceptable under extreme conditions, such as widespread famine brought about by “climate change.”

To prevent ecological disasters, including “global warming,” Holdren argued the U.S. Constitution would permit involuntary abortions, government-imposed sterilizations and laws limiting the number of children as steps justified under the banner of “sustainable well-being.”

Gregory Galluzzo — Socialist/Communist Student Of Alinsky A former Jesuit priest and executive director of the Gamaliel Foundation, Galluzzo was interview by New Republic’s Ryan Lizza and showed him the training manual he uses with new organizers. Galluzzo told Lizza that many new trainees have an aversion to Saul Alinsky’s gritty approach because they come to organizing as idealists rather than realists. Galluzzo, along with fellow trainer Mike Kruglik, schooled Obama in Alinsky tactics. The Developing Communities Project, Obama’s first employer in Chicago, was part of the Gamaliel network of organizations.

Jones was the leader and founder of a radical group, the communist revolutionary organization Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement, or STORM.

STORM worked with known communist leaders. It led the charge in black protests against various issues, including a local attempt to pass Proposition 21, a ballot initiative that sought to increase the penalties for violent crimes and require more juvenile offenders to be tried as adults.Speaking to the East Bay Express, Jones said he first became radicalized in the wake of the 1992 Rodney King riots, during which time he was arrested. “I was a rowdy nationalist on April 28th, and then the verdicts came down on April 29th,” he said. “By August, I was a communist.”

“I met all these young radical people of color — I mean really radical: communists and anarchists. And it was, like, ‘This is what I need to be a part of.’ I spent the next 10 years of my life working with a lot of those people I met in jail, trying to be a revolutionary,” he said.

      Mike Klonsky — Communist
Klonsky is an unabashed communist whose current mission is to spread Marxist ideology in the American classroom. Obama funded him to the tune of nearly $2 million. Anita Dunn — Maoist
Obama administration Communications Director Anita Dunn commended the wisdom of mass murdering Communist Chairman Mao in her address to high school students this past June. Dunn cited Mao as one of her two favorite political philosophers.

      • GoodOlBoy – you didn’t do all of that just for little ol’ me, did you?

        No? I suspected as much.

Your top quote, from Obama hinself, leaves out the critical opening line – “To avoid being mistaken for a sellout…. ” In the passage he is apologizing for the motivations for his youthful behavior. Good work, quoting out of context.

For the rest, I see lots of allegations that somebody is a socialist – but not much of the way of proof. Since you are wrong that Obama is a socialist, I greatly suspect that all of these “known associates” are either. Care to provide some additional evidence?

    • Liberals always use that tactic. I want proof, you can pile it up and it is never enough because their minds are closed to any other conclusion than the one they hold. Use Google it is easy. Though I doubt you would even believe Obama if he said it outright.

I have a little time so I will waste it on you.
      Carol Browner

John Holdren wrote those things and all you have to do is look a little.

Patrick Gaspard is a soft socialist but even more damning is his association with ACORN.

She said it on the record, look for it.

Obama’s youth was tied to communists and socialists and he surrounds himself with them not distancing him from them.

    • You are taking a liberal trick wanting me to find PROOF, I did but by googling all the names but I hit submit the addresses all disappeared. Google or Start Page them and you will find it all to be true. You are closed minded on the issue though and you won’t change your mind. Read this on Obama and his association with communism—http://realamericanpolitics.wordpress.com/2010/03/19/communist-obama/

      • You are taking a liberal trick wanting me to find PROOF

Wait. Wanting proof is a liberal trick? Did you really say that?

Seriously, my mind is open on the issue – but I want a little more evidence than recycled allegations from right-wing publications.

I didn’t help when the very first thing on your list was a quotation taken out of context. I know that you didn’t personally take the quote out of context – you merely copied the quote from some other source – but doesn’t that make you a bit wary about the reliability of your sources?

      • Saw it way to often on Politics.com. No matter how much proof you give they want more and discount what you give. Scientific papers by two PHDs in one case. I have tired of it.

Much of what is written on the communist/socialist bent of Obama and his cronies is on blogs and right wing sites because the mainstream media acts like vampires and the mere hint of Obama and socialism is noon day sun. The blogs and right wing sites are now the only ones digging up the facts. There are good blogs and some that don’t research, I research.

  2. Ok hip, you go right on thinking obama has no interest in socialism. We’ll wake you when the movie is over.

    • David, I work in what is perhaps the most liberal environments on earth – a college campus. I probably know and work with more liberals on a daily basis than you have ever met in your life.

Guess what – we aren’t socialists. Oh – of the hundreds of liberals I know, perhaps two are socialists. But being a liberal democrat (which is what Obama is) is a far cry from being a socialist.

The “socialism” tag is nothing more than a fear-inducing ploy you have been sold by a bunch of people who frankly know better.

      • If it’s not socialism then it’s a Dictatorship.

      • If it’s not socialism then it’s a Dictatorship.

Seriously? I think we have elections coming up in November, and a big one in 2012. Polls even suggest you guys are going to do pretty well.

Guess what? If in fact Obama were to somehow try to suspend elections and be a real dictator, I would be right there in the streets with you fighting it. You might have to lend me a gun, and I might shoot myself in the foot with it – but I would be just as mad about it as you.

But, the good thing is that the elections are going to happen and the American people will abide by the results of those elections – just as we always have. We don’t have dictators, and won’t in the forseeable future.

      • He has self avowed socialists and at least one self avowed communist in his asministration. Birds of a feather——

      • He has self avowed socialists and at least one self avowed communist in his asministration. Birds of a feather——

Even if I would concede that is true – which I don’t – what percentage of his advisers would be socialists? Very few. They are mostly mainstream democrats with even a few Republicans thrown in. It used to be considered a virtue to listen to all sides in a debate.

So – what has he actually done that was socialistic? Don’t try to claim health care – that bill was so far from progressive that it is pathetic. Temporarily taking over a bankrupt company and saving jobs? Would you rather have the jobs lost?

Seriously – what do you have other than blowhard accusations by Beck and his ilk?

        — hippieprof

    • 1dragon. OK – I have now read your article. You have succeeded in listing a number of things that Obama has done that you don’t like – but I don’t think you have made the point that any of them is unconstitutional.

I must admit that I do find the 20 billion from BP to be interesting – but unlike you I am proud my President was able to do it. The Exxon Valdez is STILL in the courts because Exxon has used every legal maneuver available to keep from paying what they owe. Do you want BP to be able to get away with the same?

I am curious how Obama managed to get the money – because as you note he actually doesn’t have the power to just demand it. I suspect that there was quite a bit of negotiation involved behind the scenes. I see it as a virtue that he was able to negotiate this.

I don’t have time to address each other claim in your article – and I can understand that you don’t like them – but I can’t see any that are unconstitutional.

Like I said, if Obama truly tries to become a dictator, I am right there with you in the protests.

  3. Now that all your huff and puff is out. You make assumptions about someone you have never met and know nothing about. Granted you work in that enviroment, I used to attend one, and along with my employment, puts me in contact with quite a few people during each day. I am more than familiar with democrats and liberals. I didn’t say all democrats were socialists, I said obama- I know obama is strictly by his actions. Yes I will claim health care because it is part of the socialist system- making a nation totally dependent on the government. It was a start. Stepping in at the banks and auto manufacturer’s dictating operations and pay, another step. Helping out to save a company and jobs is one thing, the way he was trying to do it is another. He can’t step in and make it a socialist nation all at once, it has to be done in steps. These were the first. Yes I believe in alternative energy, but for right now, this moment, the U.S. has the ability to become self supporting when it comes to oil if the radicals would just let us drill for it. Alaska and shallow water drilling alone would substantially help us. Drilling can be safe as long as the proper safety procedures are in place. The biggest reason for the current crisis in the gulf was a lack of proper inspection and implementation. As a whole, drilling can be very safe with little enviromental effect, but because of the radicals, we are currently dependent on the Middle East. It would also open lots of JOBS. As far as fear inducing ploys go, “tea-party” affiliates have been stuck with quite a few, and all they have tried to do is stand up against a corrupt government led by a corrupt president with an agenda to disreguard the constitution and make this country into what he wants it to be. I could go on a very long time about a lot of things that he has done and tried to do. You have just been shown some facts that has got you questioning some things. I suggest you continue that frame of thought. Hang around this site for a month. Read the information, verify it. 1Dragon is very well known to me and I can assure you that whatever is posted is the truth. If you really want to know what your president and his staff is up to then stick around. if not, I hope you will eventually get your eyes opened.

    • David says: Yes I will claim health care because it is part of the socialist system- making a nation totally dependent on the government.

Seriously? How does the bill that was passed make America dependent on the government for health care?”

If the final bill had actually included a public option, you might have been able to make that claim – but I assume you know that the public option didn’t make it?

We already have Medicare – which indeed is a government program. Are you going to claim that we already have a socialist system – and have for years?

1Dragon is very well known to me and I can assure you that whatever is posted is the truth.

I don’t take anything anybody says to be the truth automatically and I would suggest that you are doing yourself a disservice to take that tact, regardless of how insightful 1dragon might be. You need to apply critical thinking to everything you hear – even things you agree with.

I will stick around and read what is here and post my opinion on occasion. You are also welcome to do the same on my blog.
